Alexandre Farto, better known as Vhils, is a Portuguese street artist based in London. He grew up in the outskirts of Lisbon. He studied at the University of the Arts in London, Central Saint Martins, and Byam Shaw Fine Art Skills and Practices. Alexandre creates fascinating large scale portraits by carefully scratching and chipping plaster out of walls.
Alexandre is using a palette of bricks, white paint, and torn billboards, farto carves and extracts different sections in order to highlight the rich history behind the surface of each site-specific piece. His work which includes chiseled facades, installations, and printed material aims to subvert and reveal different layers both aesthetically and conceptually in order to convey underlying themes and messages that are often overlooked. Alexandre believes that we are all composed of layers upon layers of social and historical fabric.
