Scars may never disappear. Women who have suffered domestic violence can be haunted for life by the marks of abuse they carry on their bodies. A “lifetime mark,” however, can mean something different; Flavia Carvalho, a tattoo artist born in Curitiba, Brazil reinvents the term.

Her project “A Pele da Flor” i.e The Skin of the Flower, is about giving hurt women tattoos free of charge. For two years, Carvalho has helped women cover scars left from knives and bullets, and from mastectomies as well. She‘s transforming these unpleasant mementos into a tool of empowerment and beauty.
