Playfully Embroidered X-Ray Film by Matthew Cox

Philadelphia artist Matthew Cox creates pieces by layering embroidery on top of medical X-rays and MRI scans. Adding a touch of softness to stark images of knees, skulls, and chests, Matthew Cox uses bright thread to embroider on X-ray film.

In some cases he overlays the heads of iconic characters, such as Disney’s Snow White, Miss Piggy and David Bowie onto chest X-rays.

Cox says that the X-ray tends to dictate the final outcome. “It could be some interesting feature that grabs my attention such as a necklace or knee replacement, or a position of the figure.”
